7 Days Mt Kilimanjaro: Machame out Mweka / Tusker Route
Tour Overview
The Machame route is arguably the most scenic and probably the most beautiful route by which to ascend the mighty Mount Kilimanjaro. The trek begins in the south-west area of the mountain at Machame Gate and descends down Mweka, on the south-east side of the mountain thus offering climbers the most varied scenary of Kilimanjaro. Additionally, Machame visits stunning places such as Shira Plateau, Barranco, and Lava Tower.
Machame route is known as the "Whiskey Route" in comparison to Marangu because it is a more difficult route and trekkers sleep in camping tents as opposed to huts. Machame is the second most popular route on the mountain.
Nights are spent in 'mountain tents' sleeping two persons per tent (3 man tents, so there is space for your luggage). All your supplies and camping equipment are carried by porters and your meals are prepared.
Machame is ideal for those who want a more difficult climb, and are confident in their ability to hike for long periods of time over somewhat steep terrain. The route takes six days minimum to complete, although seven days is recommended to increase the chances of summiting. The descent is down Mweka, on the south-east side of the mountain.

Tour Plan
Arrive in Moshi, a lively Tanzanian town sitting quietly beneath the towering presence of Mount Kilimanjaro. After your airport pickup, you'll be transferred to your hotel, where you’ll meet your experienced guides for a detailed climb briefing and equipment check. Spend the evening enjoying local hospitality and views of the snow-capped summit—your goal is now in sight.
After breakfast, drive to Machame Gate, the starting point of the Machame (or Tusker) Route. The climb begins through lush montane rainforest, rich in flora and birdlife. The trail is gentle but steadily climbs, ending the day at Machame Camp, located just above the tree line. Settle into camp, enjoy a hot meal prepared by your support crew, and rest beneath a sky full of stars.
The trail continues with a shorter but steeper ascent through moorland and heath, offering incredible views of Mount Meru and Kibo Peak. You’ll pass bizarre, towering senecio plants and volcanic ridges before reaching Shira Camp, located on a high plateau. Take in your first sweeping views of Kilimanjaro’s glacier-capped summit. Rest, hydrate, and acclimatize at camp.
This key acclimatization day starts with a steady climb toward the Lava Tower, a 300-foot volcanic plug that tests your altitude tolerance at 4,630m. After lunch here, descend through the beautiful Barranco Valley, where you’ll encounter giant lobelias and other unique alpine flora. You’ll arrive at Barranco Camp, tucked under the looming face of the Great Barranco Wall—a scenic and dramatic campsite to rest and refuel.
Begin the day by ascending the impressive Barranco Wall—a scramble with breathtaking views. The trail continues up and down through alpine valleys, passing under the southern glaciers of Kibo. The relatively short trek ends at Karanga Camp, a key stop for acclimatization. The afternoon is free for rest, light walks, or simply enjoying the quiet majesty of Kilimanjaro's upper slopes.
Today’s hike is a gradual but steady ascent over rocky terrain. You’ll reach Barafu Camp, the final base before your summit attempt. From here, gaze out at Mawenzi Peak and the summit ridge you’ll soon conquer. After an early dinner and final briefing, rest as much as possible. At midnight, your summit push begins—this is where your resolve, training, and spirit will be tested.
Your summit attempt begins in the dark, under starlight and crisp air. Ascend steadily through scree and switchbacks until reaching Stella Point (5,739m). From here, push on to Uhuru Peak, the roof of Africa. Reaching the summit at sunrise is a moment of pure triumph—capture your victory photos with the iconic sign, then begin your descent. Return to Barafu for a short rest before heading down to Mweka Camp through moorland and forest. After 12–15 hours of trekking, you’ll sleep deeply, fulfilled by your achievement.
After breakfast, make your final descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. Here, you'll receive your summit certificate, say farewell to your mountain team, and celebrate your success. Return to your hotel in Moshi for a hot shower, a well-earned meal, and time to relax. As the dust settles and the mountain fades into the horizon, you carry home an unforgettable experience—Mamu Travels' Kilimanjaro Tusker Route, where every step told a story of courage and beauty.
